Teen Jonathan Gonzalez helps top seed Monterrey win Liguilla opener

Monterrey, winner of the first phase of Mexico's Torneo Apertura, began its bid to win the Liguilla with a 2-1 win over Atlas in which American teenager Jonathan Gonzalez helped set up the second goal.

Former FC Dallas youth player Rogelio Funes Mori scored both goals for the Rayados in quick succession in the first half.

The first goal in the fourth minute followed a horrible turnover by Atlas defender Javier Salas. On the second goal, the 18-year-old Gonzalez played a perfectly flighted ball into the area to Aviles Hurtado, whose centering pass hit off Rafael Marquez-- that Rafael Marquez -- to Funes Mori, who made it 2-0.

Next: The second leg will be in Monterrey on Sunday (UDN, 6 pm ET).

-- William Yarbrough started in goal for Leon in its 1-1 tie with Tigres. Lalo Fernandez and Jose Torres were on the bench for Tigres.
