MLS Moves: 'Caps bring back Russell Teibert on three-year deal

The longest-serving player in the MLS history of Vancouver has signed a new contract with the club.

Midfielder Russell Teibert, 24, has agreed to a new, three-year contract at undisclosed terms, the team announced Wednesday. Since signing a Homegrown Player contract in 2011 at the start of Vancouver’s first MLS season, Teibert has scored two goals and registered 15 assists in 141 first-team games (101 starts) in all competitions during his six professional seasons.

Teibert’s MLS playing time has dipped the past two seasons. After playing 76 games from 2013 to 2015, he made just 12 appearances last year and 11 in 2017. The club declined an option on Teibert’s previous contract and though eligible for the Re-Entry Draft he chose to negotiate a new deal. According to MLSPU salary figures his guaranteed compensation in 2017 was $194,000.

The native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, has earned 20 caps (seven starts) and scored one goal for Canada, and is the all-time leader in Canadian Championship appearances with 19. He first joined the Whitecaps as a member of their residency program in 2008.

“Russell has matured and grown with this club and he will continue to The  be a key member of the team in the coming years,”  said Robinson in a team press release announcing the agreement. “He's a model professional who, if playing or not, never changes his mentality or will for the team to win. You need passionate and driven players like that in your squad. Russell’s hard work and determination will continue to push the group.”

The ‘Caps declined options on 11 other players and renewed the deals of seven others. Teibert’s return brings the current roster up to 21 players. Last week the club signed Venezuelan striker Anthony Blondell, 23, using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM).
