MLS offseason process continues with Waiver Draft

Nearly five dozen players will be available to MLS teams when the league conducts its offseason Waiver Draft Wednesday.

The players are those not eligible for Free Agency or the Re-Entry Drafts and are either out of contract or their 2018 contract options were not picked up. Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft will be held Friday.

The list does not include players whose options have been declined but their clubs have notified the league of their interest in re-signing them. In such circumstances teams are not required to waive these players. Waived players not selected can negotiate with any teams.

Among the players available are L.A. Galaxy defender Jamie Villarreal and former U.S. international centerback Oguchi Onyewu.

Teams will pick in reverse order of their finish during the 2017 season, taking into account postseason results, if any. The Galaxy will pick first. Expansion club Los Angeles FC, which holds the No. 1 pick in the SuperDraft to be conducted next month, has been placed in the 23rd and last spot.
