U.S. ref to serve as VAR for Club World Cup final

MLS ref Mark Geiger  will serve as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup Final on Saturday, when Real Madrid faces Gremio in Abu Dhabi (Telemundo, noon, ET).

Geiger, who has officiated more than 170 MLS games and served on six games as VAR, which MLS introduced this season, worked three games at the 2014 World Cup and, along with fellow U.S. ref Jair Marrufo, took part last month in a seminar organized by the FIFA Referees Committee in Abu Dhabi as part of the preparations for the 2018 World Cup.

“Any time you are selected for international competition, it is a huge honor,” said Geiger a statement released by PRO (Professional Referee Organization). “To represent the federation, the league, yourself, your confederation, it’s truly humbling and exciting. We have now been involved with this project for over a year, and feel confident that we have the high-level training to apply this new skillset to both domestic and international competitions.”

Geiger recently refereed the World Cup qualifying playoff between New Zealand and Peru.
