Youth: Bethune strike gives U.S. U-17 girls sweep over Haiti

A second-minute goal by captain Croix Bethune  held up for a 1-0 U.S. U-17 girls national team win over Haiti, which the USA had defeated, 5-0, two days earlier.

Standing (L-R): Tori Hansen, Astrid Wheeler, Lindsey Romig, Smith Hunter, Isabella D’Aquila, Kate Wiesner; front row: Kalyssa Van Zanten, May Doms, Croix Bethune, Samantha Meza, Natalia Staude.

The strike by Bethune (Concord Fire), coming off a pass from fellow Georgian Natalia Staude (Tophat SC), was Bethune's fourth for Coach Mark Carr's U-17 team, which finished the year with a 9-1-3 (win-loss-tie) record. The only defeat came in a 5-4 loss to China in Weifang in July.

“It's good to finish out the year with two wins and two shutouts,” said Carr. “Overall, I am so proud of what this U-17 group accomplished in 2017. Not only in terms of results, but more in how they have progressed and improved individually and collectively.”

The team is preparing for the 2018 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship April 19-29 in Nicaragua from which three teams will qualify for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.

"It's always difficult to play an opponent for a second time in three days,” said Carr. “We had a lot of the ball, but lacked the final product in moments. Tonight, Haiti made it very difficult for us and we know this is how it will be at World Cup qualifying. There are no guarantees."
