U.S. Soccer presidential election: Eight candidates confirmed

Eight of the nine candidates for U.S. Soccer president -- all but Paul Lapointe-- were confirmed by the federation's Nominating and Governance Committee.

U.S. Soccer’s National Council will pick a president to succeed Sunil Gulati at its meeting on Feb. 10 during the federation's AGM in Orlando.

Candidates had until Dec. 12 -- 60 days before the election --  to submit at least three letters of nomination on official letterhead from organization members and/or one of three athlete members of the board of directors. They also had to complete a background check.

The election rules were approved by the board of directors on Sept. 1.
