Tobin Heath out 8-12 weeks following ankle surgery

U.S. star Tobin Heath underwent surgery on Thursday to remove a bone growth from her right ankle. She will be sidelined for 8-12 weeks and miss the first big test of 2018 for the women's national team, the SheBelieves Cup in March against England, France and Germany.

Heath, who won the 2017 NWSL title with the Portland Thorns but has not played since the championship game against the North Carolina Courage, was already scheduled to miss the January training camp that begins Saturday.

She would have been on the U.S. roster but for the ankle issue that required the clean-up procedure.

"It’s been bothering me for a while now and we tried to rehab," said Heath, "but I wasn’t progressing so it was time to address it surgically. I want to make sure it’s not a hindrance moving forward so I can get back on the field and have great preparation for a big year ahead.”
