January camp: Sauerbrunn and Brian out with injuries

U.S. national team captain Becky Sauerbrunn and midfielder Morgan Brian will not participate in the January camp taking place in Carson, California, and will not be replaced on the camp roster, now down to 24 players.

Sauerbrunn withdrew after medical evaluations before the start of camp revealed a stress reaction in her left foot. The injury will require several weeks of rest. Brian will stay at French club Lyon, which she has just joined, and work on regaining her fitness. Injuries limited her to two starts and six appearances for the USA last season.

No rush. The USA has a long year ahead of it with the Concacaf championship slated for October, so there is no need to rush the two 2015 Women's World Cup veterans back into the team.

Three other players who would have been in camp are dealing with injuries: Tobin Heath (ankle), Samantha Mewis (knee) and Rose Lavelle (hamstring).

The USA will face Denmark in its first game of the year on Jan. 21 clash in San Diego. After that: SheBelieves Cup in early March.
