US Abroad (Feb. 21-24): Friedel shines; Berhalter streak continues

Brad Friedel continued his excellent play by helping Blackburn defeat fourth-place Chelsea in English Premier League action. One division below, Marcus Hahnemann added another shutout, bringing his season total to a remarkable 14.

ENGLAND

* Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL) at Chelsea, 2-1.

Started: 90 minutes. Another sparkling performance by Friedel and a late goal by David Dunn propeled Rovers to a huge road victory. The result allowed Everton to pull even with Chelsea in fourth place in the Premier League. Next match: Saturday, March 1 vs. Manchester City.

* Kasey Keller (Tottenham, PL) vs. Fulham, 1-1.

Started: 90 minutes. Keller was beaten by teammate Ledly King, who deflected Boa Morte's cross into the Tottenham goal. Playing against 10-man Fulham for 35 minutes -- after Fulham keeper Maik Taylor's ejection and before Spurs' Darren Anderton's red card -- Tottenham squandered a chance to move into sixth place and remains in eighth.

Keller has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract extension with Tottenham that would keep him with the club through two more seasons following the 2002-03 campaign.

The Washington native is expected to make his first U.S. national team appearance of the year when the Americans host Japan for in a March 29 friendly in Seattle.

* Brian McBride (Everton, PL) vs. Southampton, 2-1.

Started: 59 minutes. McBride contiues to help Everton's recent stretch of good play. The club has gone 4-2 with McBride in the lineup and is now tied with Chelsea for fourth place. Next match: Saturday, March 1 at Middlesbrough.
