U.S. women's national team veteran Amy Rodriguez
, recovering from an ACL injury to her left knee suffered on the opening day of the 2017 NWSL season, will join the Utah Royals for their first
season in the NWSL.
Rodriguez was injured in FC Kansas City's opening game, her first game back after missing all of 2016 due to the birth of her second child. A-Rod's NWSL rights were
transferred to the Royals when FC Kansas City folded after the 2017 season.
“We are excited to get Amy into Salt Lake and help finish off her rehabilitation so she can again show
what a huge talent she is,” said Utah coach Laura Harvey
. “Amy has proven her ability to score goals in every year that she has been fit and available in the NWSL. I’m
so excited to finally have her on my team and not have to watch her play against me, as she has always haunted my teams.”
In 2013, Rodriguez played briefly for Harvey with the
Seattle Reign before being traded to FC Kansas City. In 2014, Rodriguez scored both goals for FC Kansas City in a 2-1 victory over Seattle in the NWSL championship game. She also scored the
game-winner in the 2015 title match, again against Harvey’s Reign, and was named the game's MVP.
Rodriguez also played in WPS with the Boston Breakers and Philadelphia
Independence for which she was a Best XI selection in 2010. She has scored 44 goals in 92 pro games, including 26 in 38 NWSL matches.
She has made 130 appearances and scored 30 goals for
the USA. She won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012 and was a member of the 2015 Women's World Cup championship team
