scored his first goal for Werder Bremen since September 2016 when he lobbed goalkeeper Bernd Leno
with a delicate shot from 12 yards out in the seventh minute of the
German Cup match against Bayer Leverkusen.
But the Icelandic-American suffered a hip injury that forced him to leave at halftime of the quarterfinal game Leverkusen won,
4-2, in overtime. Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt
said afterwards he did not believe the injury was serious.
A hip injury in Johannsson's first season at Werder Bremen set him back
after arriving from Dutch club AZ. He has played just 20 Bundesliga games (seven starts) in three seasons.
