U.S. SOCCER: Heinrichs calls in full national team for Algarve Cup

U.S. women's national team head coach April Heinrichs named the 20 players who will travel to Portugal for the Algarve Cup March 14-20.

The trip marks the first time this year that Heinrichs has had her full team. She gave several veterans time off in January and February.

The 20 players who are going to Portugal would figure to be first in line to make the World Cup roster next fall. The Algarve Cup roster includes 17 WUSA players, plus University of North Carolina standouts Cat Reddick and Lindsay Tarpley and UNC-bound high school star Heather O'Reilly.

The Americans will open the Algarve Cup on March 14 against Canada, face Norway on March 16, and finish Group A play against Sweden on March 18. The placement games will take place on March 20.

Group B features China, Denmark, France and Finland. Group C, which features lower-tiered teams, consists of host Portugal, Ireland, Wales and Greece, which is preparing its team for the 2004 Olympic Tournament.

This will be the eighth appearance by the U.S. women at the Algarve Cup. The only American title came in 2000 when a Brandi Chastain penalty kick held up for a 1-0 victory over Norway in the championship game.
