MLS Moves: Asad signing gives young D.C. midfield big attacking boost

D.C. United signed 23-year-old Argentine midfielder Yamil Asad, one of the young stars for Atlanta United in its first MLS season.

Atlanta United was unable to reach an agreement for an extension of its loan agreement with Argentine club Velez Sarsfield. Velez has loaned Velez to D.C. United after it acquired its MLS rights from Atlanta United., which gets:

-- $200,000 GAM and $100,000 TAM paid in 2018;
-- $100,000 GAM and $100,000 TAM paid in 2019; and
-- $100,000 in GAM if Asad appears in at least one MLS match in 2020.

Asad, who had seven goals and 13 assists in 2017, will join a young D.C. midfield that includes fellow Argentine Luciano Acosta and U.S. international Paul Arriola. Americans Russell Canouse and Ian Harkes, like Arriola, attended the national team's January camp. Also acquired in the offseason was Venezuelan midfielder Junior Moreno.

“Yamil is a bright talent in MLS, who was a major contributor to Atlanta’s successful inaugural campaign,” United GM Dave Kasper said in a statement. “His pace, skill and creativity in wide areas will provide us with an additional attacking dimension. He’s a young player who plays with a big personality and a high work rate, and he will continue to develop and improve with more experience in this league. We’re thrilled to add him.”
