Sounders' Garth Lagerwey: 'I'm flattered to be considered' for USMNT GM position

Seattle Sounders general manager & president of soccer Garth Lagerwey, who has helped build championship teams at Real Salt Lake (2009) and Seattle (2016), downplayed a report without ruling out his interest in the new U.S. men's national team general manager position.

SI.com's Grant Wahl reported on Tuesday that Lagerwey was under consideration for the new position approved by U.S. Soccer's board of directors.

“I read in the paper that they’re looking for GM candidates,” Lagerwey said. “I’m flattered to be considered. I’ve said a couple times, whether it’s working for U.S. Soccer or whether it’s my current role, I want to be part of the solution. There’s room for improvement there. That said, I’m really happy with the Sounders. I really like my job. I think I have one of the best jobs in soccer. This is not something that I would leave lightly or without serious consideration. Right now, I’m focused on trying to get these last couple of signings over the line before [Concacaf] Champions League starts.”

At a press conference on Saturday following Carlos Cordeiro's election as U.S. Soccer president, U.S. Soccer secretary general Dan Flynn said the federation has already identified some candidates and he will go over with Cordeiro an outline for the process to select the general manager.

The federation board has approved positions for men's and women's national team general managers after a review process that began last summer. There is more urgency now on the men's side, where the national team has been in limbo since Oct. 10 and its elimination from the 2018 World Cup.

There is a more immediate need to fill the men's GM position than to hire a new men's national team head. Dave Sarachan has been serving as interim head coach since Bruce Arena's resignation following the 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago.

The Sounders open their 2018 competitive season on Feb. 22 at Salvadoran club Santa Tecla in the round of 16 of the CCL.

Anyone have information regarding the MNT and WNT general manager job descriptions? Is it just the senior teams? Is USSF keeping the Technical Director positions and who will they and the technical staff report to?

If USSF has any formal structure, I cannot find it.

Bob, what level security clearance do you have? Hah. I haven’t heard or come across anything either. I’m guessing, probably incorrectly, that the GM’s would oversee all national teams. Like you, I’ve found many of Mr. Guvners ideas plausible and no mention from anyone, including the candidates, any addresment of specifics. With anything! Saw your concern of another level of management. I’m hopeful Mr Cordeiro, with help from others, will shortly provide a template for going forward.

We think alike on this. My first thought was "what happened to USSF claims of transparency?"

TO BOB A, & WOODEN S:  Since the US Soccer apparetnly plays a lot of poker and keeps its cards close to their vests, not even known what the job description is all about, requirements, references, etc., much like most if not all hiring outfits look for/require, why don't the three of us also throw our hats into the mix?  As for some sort of structure, I am sure that if you were to go the US Soccer House site you might find it there, but for the newly created GM gigs, and since they aren't that transparent, heck we'd stand a fairly good chance and we can apply as the Three Amigos!!!  Saludos!

Ric, USSF doesn't put information about its organizational structure on its website. They do have a help wanted section on their site, but the GM jobs are not listed.

I am flattered to be included with the two of you, even in jest. I am likely the least qualified soccer coach in the country. My management and training knowledge comes from professional training and 35 years working in the public sector, which I applied to volunteer coaching.
