Danny Barbir headed back to Europe with Romania's Astra

Danny Barbir, one of the first members of the 2015 U.S. Under-17 World Cup team to head to Europe thanks to his Romanian passport, returned to Europe to play for Astra, currently tied for fourth in the Romanian Liga 1.

Barbir, 20, spent time in the Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion youth systems without breaking into their first teams. He signed with Whitecaps FC 2 late in the 2017 USL season but the MLS club folded its second team after the season. Barbir joins New York Red Bulls forward Anatole Abang, who is on loan to Astra.

Barbir grew up in Macungie, Pennsylvania, and played for New Jersey's PDA before entering U-17 residency along with fellow Pennsylvanians Christian Pulisic and Kevin Silva. All three went to make the 2015 U.S. U-17 World Cup team.
