What They're Saying: Rafael Membreno

“The people here liked the idea of having a team again with the name of Santa Tecla. We have tried to keep it going and take it to a higher level. It’s something we all needed.’’

-- Rafael Membreno, a sports spokesperson for Santa Tecla, which will host the Seattle Sounders in the Concacaf Champions League on Thursday night. Santa Tecla FC was formed only 11 years ago, in the aftermath of a landslide that killed 585 residents, but it has become a Salvadoran soccer power and source of pride for the community. The city subsidizes Santa Tecla FC to the tune of about $30,000 a month. (Seattle Times)
