Kellyn Acosta sidelined 6-8 weeks following sports hernia surgery.

FC Dallas will be without star midfielder Kellyn Acosta for 6-8 weeks following surgery to repair a sports hernia.

The surgery was held Wednesday at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. It came a day after FC Dallas opened its Concacaf Champions League campaign with a 1-0 loss at Tauro FC in Panama City. In 2017, Acosta scored three goals in four games to lead FC Dallas to the Concacaf Champions League semifinals.

A groin injury kept Acosta out of action for much of the latter part of the 2017 season as FC Dallas, first in the Western Conference in the 2015 and 2016 regular season, slumped and finished seventh, missing the playoffs.

Before then, the 22-year-old Acosta was named an MLS all-star and started for the USA, which won the 2017 Gold Cup. In five seasons, he has played 104 regular-season MLS games.

In the loss to Tauro FC, Victor Ulloa started in Acosta's place in central midfield alongside Carlos Gruezo.
