WUSA: Founders Cup III awarded to San Diego

Founders Cup III, the WUSA's championship match, has been awarded to San Diego's Torero Stadium, bringing the title match West after playing the first two on the East Coast.

Torero Stadium, on the campus of the University of San Diego, seats only 7,035, but league officials are looking at options to expand capacity for the Aug. 24 championship match.

San Jose beat Atlanta on penalty kicks in the 2001 Founders Cup, played at Foxboro Stadium outside Boston, and Carolina edged Washington in last year's final, played at Herndon Stadium at Morris Brown College in Atlanta.

The WUSA also has announced that the June 19 All-Star Game will be played at SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C., the home of the Carolina Courage. The match will pit American stars against the league's top foreign players.

Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN2.
