Hrubesch replaces Steffi Jones as Germany's women's national team coach

Following its last-place finish as the SheBelieves Cup, Germany fired Steffi Jones and named former German international Horst Hrubesch as interim coach of the women’s national team.

Hrubesch has had a long career as a coach in Germany's men's national team program, but he has never coached the German women.

“I have been following women’s football for years and was at last year’s Euro as well,” Hrubesch said in a statement. “I am very happy to help out at this stage.”

Jones took over for Silvia Neid after Germany won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, but the results have been poor.

Germany went into Euro 2017 as the six-time defending European champion but lost in the quarterfinals. In October, it lost at home to Iceland, 3-2, in a Women's World Cup 2019 qualifier. It lost to the USA and France and tied England at the SheBelieves Cup.

Germany will play World Cup qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Slovenia in April.
