College Coaching Moves: Ohio State's John Bluem set to retire

John Bluem will step down as Ohio State's men's soccer coach on April 30 after 21 years with the Buckeyes.

Bluem led Ohio State to four Big Ten titles and 10 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including its first in the College Cup in 2007.

Ohio State went 17-4-5 overall and won three tournament games at home to advance to the College Cup, where a 1-0 win over Massachusetts extended the Buckeyes' unbeaten streak to 15 games. The 2007 season ended with a 2-1 loss to No. 1 Wake Forest in the final.

"During John's tenure as our head men's soccer coach, he has positively impacted hundreds of young men," Gene Smith, Ohio State's athletics director, said. "Buckeye nation appreciates his commitment and dedication to leading the right way."

Among the players he coached were Sporting KC midfielder Roger Espinoza and Minnesota United goalkeeper Matt Lampson.

Bluem came from Fresno State, where he averaged 14 wins per season and qualified for NCAA postseason play in four of his six years as head coach.

He played at Hartwick and spent two seasons in the NASL with the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
