Christen Press, unwilling to play in the NWSL for the Houston Dash, is headed back to Kopparbergs/Goteborg FC on a short-term deal in Sweden, where her career took off.
Christen Press: The Pitch The move came two months after a
three-team trade sent her from the Chicago Red Stars to Houston in a deal that
sent
Carli Lloyd to Sky Blue FC and 2017 NWSL MVP
Sam Kerr to Chicago. The Dash was unable to swing a second deal to a club of her wishes, forcing the move to Sweden, where she will join
two other Americans at Kopparbergs/Goteborg,
Taylor Leach and
Savannah Levin.
Press, who starred at Stanford, was the WPS Rookie of the Year for
magicJack in 2011, the league's final season. With no U.S. pro league on the horizon, she moved to Sweden, playing for Kopparbergs/Goteborg in 2012 and Tyreso in 2013-14. Her play led to her first
call-up to national team in 2013.
The short-term deal leaves open the possibility that Press will move to another NWSL in the summer -- the Dash holds her NWSL rights -- when the league's
transfer window re-opens. It could allow for her to move to a bigger club in France or England.
Another possibility would be Barcelona. The Spanish club is expected to operate an NWSL
team, beginning in 2019. The likely venue for Barca USA: Press' hometown of Los Angeles.
In the meantime, Press was
dropped from the USA's squad for two friendlies next week against Mexico.
Good for her. Not appreciated by J. Ellis, not one of her favorites. Ellis is the one that should go overseas!
Well that’s a turn of events.
im certain she will do just fine in Sweden and maybe she start up her blog again.
not sure why she is dropped from US squad that don’t seem like a good idea she is a great player.
is politics involved?
So she's being punished by USSF for not wanting to go to Houston... hmmm Is SUM involved?
