U.S. Open Cup: Rey Ortiz leads Portland Timbers U23 to historic win

The 2018 U.S. Open Cup moves into full swing on Wednesday when 25 first-round games will be played. They follow three play-in games played on Sunday, and Tuesday's first-round game won by Portland Timbers U23.

Preview: Three intriguing first-round matchups

The 5-0 win over Kitsap SC was the biggest margin of victory by a PDL team over an NPSL team in the history of the tournament. It was a long night for Kitsap, which lost defender Kevin Francis to a red card after 10 minutes and conceded two own goals.

The University of Portland's Rey Ortiz was a thorn in Kitsap's side, opening the scoring for the Timbers on a free kick and sending in balls that led to both own goals.

The Timbers, who operate out of Salem, Oregon, also got goals from Oregon State's Don Tchilao and Joel Walker.
