U.S. Open Cup: NPSL gets edge on PDL

NPSL vs. PDL. NPSL teams took seven of 12 matches against teams from the rival PDL.
The victories included 2-1 decisions for FC Motown over the New York Red Bulls U23 thanks to a pair of goals by former MLS player Dilly Duka and NPSL champion Elm City Express over the Western Mass Pioneers, one of the oldest clubs in the USL system, in a match decided by a goal from Shaquille Saunchez.
On the PDL ledger, the Long Island Rough Riders came back from two goals down to tie the NPSL's Kingston Stockade, 2-2, and pull away for a 6-3 overtime win. Bernardo Mattos was shown a second yellow card in the 90th minute, leaving Kingston with 10 players.
-- One of the 12 NPSL winners was Paul Caligiuri's Orange County FC, which moved on with a 3-0 win over the UPSL's Santa Ana Winds. Daniel ten Bosch scored two goals and Alessandro Canale added the third goal.
Motor City derby. In one of six games decided in shootouts, the NPSL's Detroit City FC beat the PDL's Michigan Bucks, 5-4, after their game ended 1-1. Nate Steinwascher was the hero, stopping two Bucks' penalty kicks, to the delight of the 3,416 fans in Hamtramck.

Battle of the five boroughs. The Brooklyn Italians took the battle of Brooklyn with a 3-2 win over the New York Cosmos B, then fell, 2-0, to Lansdowne Bhoys from the Bronx.

Open Division qualifiers. Lansdowne Bhoys from the Cosmopolitan League were among four teams from Open Division qualifying who moved into the second round. Also moving on were NTX Rayados, FC Denver and Sporting AZ. Baltimore's Christos FC, which reached the fourth round in 2017, fell to the PDL's Reading United in a shootout. Eight other qualifiers also lost.
NASL survivors. Both remaining teams backed by NASL clubs won: Jacksonville Armada (2-0 winner at SIMA Aguilas) and Miami FC (4-0 winner over Red Force FC).
