U.S. Abroad: Fortuna Duesseldorf goes with experience in signing Morales

After five seasons at FC Ingolstadt, 28-year-old German-American Alfredo Morales is headed back to the Bundesliga, signing with promoted Fortuna Duesseldorf through the 2010-211 season.

He joined Ingolstadt from his hometown Hertha Berlin in 2013 and played two seasons in the Bundesliga and three in the 2. Bundesliga for Ingolstadt. He had four goals and one assist in 2017-18. His 27 appearances were third among Americans in the top two German divisions.

"With Alfredo Morales," said Fortuna head coach Friedhelm Funkel, "we have gone with an experienced Bundesliga professional. He has shown in his more than 150 appearances in the first and second league that he brings quality for the Bundesliga. With his mentality, he will help us immediately."

Morales has played 59 first division games (two goals) to go along with 113 second division games (eight goals).

Fortuna story. Fortuna Duesseldorf won the second division by three points over Nuremberg. It was a strong Bundesliga team in the 1970s and 1980s, reaching the Cup Winners' Cup final in 1979, but it bounced back and forth between the Bundesliga and lower divisions since then. It fell to as low as the fourth-tier Oberliga Nordrhein in 2002-04. Its last appearance in the Bundesliga was in 2012-13.
