Peter Wilt joins Madison group to operate team in new USL Division III

Madison, the home of the University of Wisconsin, has joined USL Division III as its fourth member for its 2019 launch after South Georgia Tormenta FC, FC Tucson and Greenville Pro Soccer.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that veteran soccer executive Peter Wilt has been hired to oversee the Madison operation at city-owned Breeze Stevens Field. Wilt most recently co-founded the National Independent Soccer Association, a proposed third division league that has yet to get off the ground.

Wilt stepped down from his position with the NISA to take the Madison position. He was also announced as a soccer business writer for The Athletic's new soccer site.

The Big Top Soccer ownership group is led by Vern Stenman, Conor Caloia, Jim Kacmarcik and Steve Schmitt. The group is heavily involved in the Northwoods League, a summer college baseball league with a strong presence in Wisconsin.

A new 10-year use agreement between Big Top Events and the City of Madison providing for $1.3 million of improvements to Breese Stevens Field was approved by the Madison Common Council on Tuesday.
