Open Cup: Three MLS teams open against amateur teams

The LA Galaxy, Houston Dynamo and Orlando City were drawn against amateur teams in the fourth round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup.

Only OCSC will play on the road, traveling to Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah to face Miami United, which has beaten Miami FC 2 and the Jacksonville Armada in the last two rounds.

The Galaxy will host the FC Golden State Force at the StubHub Center's track & field stadium, while the Dynamo will host NTX Rayados from the Dallas area.

-- Defending USL champion Louisville City and the Division II league's highest-drawing teams, FC Cincinnati and Sacramento Republic FC, all earned home dates against MLS teams.

-- The schedule includes four MLS matchups, highlighted by the Red Bulls-NYCFC derby.

-- Five pro teams open at stadiums other than their main stadiums.

What is especially unsettling here is that local TV stations do not bother to broadcast US Open Cup matches and local newspapers provide scant coverage.  Long ago, I wrote Gulati that USSF has to work much harder, first, to seed sports media with people who actually know something about the game of soccer, and then to push for ever more TV coverage and articles.  One must take the view that sports media are an extension of sports PR efforts, just like the TV shows Entertainment Tonight, TMZ, Academy Awards and similar do publicity for film, TV and the arts.  So far, USSF does not seem to get it, shooting off one toe after another.   Cordiero, are you listening?

No, he’s not listening nor is anyone with US Soccer. They don’t care. Show me the $!
