2. PRESEASON: Creighton wins Westfield Insurance Cup


Creighton won the men's competition at the Westfield Insurance Cup, 3-1 on penalty kicks, over Clemson in Sunday’s final. The teams had played to a 2-2 tie. Clemson twice took the lead on goals by Tate Parrish and Michael Brooks, but the Bluejays equalized, first through Tyler Stansberry’s penalty kick and then Irishman Alan O’Hara’s own goal. Host Akron beat Indiana, 1-0, in the third-place game. The women's championship game also went to a shootout, where Cincinnati prevailed over Wright State.

In other men's preseason action:

-- Before 6,118 fans in Ft. Wayne, Ind., Indiana, ranked No. 14 in the Soccer America Men's Preseason Top 25, beat defending NCAA champion Maryland, 1-0, on reserve Brian Ackley’s goal, his second game-winner in preseason. Indiana keepers Chris Munroe and Chay Cain combined for eight saves to keep the No. 4 Terrapins scoreless.

-- No. 15 Duke and No. 8 Connecticut tied, 1-1, on Saturday at Koskinen Stadium. Kyle Helton scored for the Blue Devils, who had an 8-2 advantage in shots for each half. Jamaican O’Brian White scored for UConn to give the Huskies an early lead.

-- A pair of second-half goals by Hunter West and Jordan Seabrook, coupled with a solid outing by goalkeeper Dane Brenner, led No. 9 South Florida to a 2-0 victory over No. 25 Saint Louis, 2-0, on Saturday at SLU's Hermann Stadium, site of the 2007 Men's College Cup.

-- No. 16 New Mexico, last year’s NCAA Division I runner-up, beat the 2005 NCAA Division II champion Ft. Lewis, 4-2, in Durango, Colo. Norwegian senior Lars Loeseth led the Lobos with a goal and an assist. Ft. Lewis star John Cunliffe scored twice for the Skyhawks.
