Seattle Sounders Women win first WPSL championship

Seattle Sounders Women defeated Pensacola FC, 3-1, to capture the WPSL for the first time since it joined the 108-team league in 2016 after the W-League folded.

Georgia Cloepfil, who has played in Australia, Sweden and South Korea since graduating from Division III Macalester College, set incoming Florida State freshman Kirsten Pavlisko and Spanish international Celia Jimenez Delgato for the first two Seattle goals. Pascale Dumesnil closed out the scoring in stoppage time.

"It’s an incredible feeling, a long journey but a journey I don’t want to end.” Sounders coach Scott Ford said. “It’s a special feeling.”

The Sounders, who finished with a 10-0-1 record, defeated Fire & Ice SC, the defending league champion from St. Louis, in the semifinals.

Former Sounders Women players include Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Sydney Leroux and Rose Lavelle.
