2. MLS: Cunningham red hot for surging Salt Lake

Jeff Cunningham assisted twice and scored his league-leading 14th goal as Real Salt Lake won an unprecedented fourth straight game with a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo. Chris Klein and Douglas Sequeira also scored for Salt Lake, now just two points out of a playoff spot, in front of a 14,091 crowd at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Cunningham is two goals shy of his highest-scoring season. He struck 16 goals for Columbus in 2002. He has scored 10 or more goals in five of his nine MLS seasons.

After a 0-0 tie with D.C. United in his first game in charge of the New York Red Bulls, Coach Bruce Arena's second game was a 1-0 loss to the Columbus Crew, MLS's worst team this season. Joseph Ngwenya's goal was all the Crew needed to end a 13-game winless streak in front of an announced crowd of 20,149 in Columbus.

An announced crowd of 18,006 at RFK Stadium watched D.C. United tie its third game in a row, 1-1 against Colorado. Kyle Beckerman scored for Colorado in the first half and Christian Gomez notched his eighth goal of the season in the second half.

Santino Quaranta scored his second goal in his third appearance for Los Angeles since arriving from D.C. United to help the last-place Galaxy down first-place FC Dallas, 2-0, in front of announced crowd of 21,967 at the Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan scored his fifth goal of the season in for L.A., which is five points out of the playoff zone.

The 2005 runner-up New England dropped below the .500 mark with a 1-0 loss to Chicago, whose Andy Herron scored his fifth goal of the season. Six Fire players and three Revs were yellow-carded in the game played before 10,263 fans in Foxboro, Mass. Chicago, a week after dropping to fifth place, now sits second in the East behind D.C. United.

Rookie of the Year front-runner Jonathan Bornstein scored in the 83rd minute to salvage a 1-1 tie for Chivas USA against Kansas City, for which Jose Burciaga struck late in the first half on a free kick in front of 10,989 at the Home Depot Center. It was Bornstein's fifth goal of the season and Burciaga's sixth.
