Believe it or not, Zack Steffen  clung to his mom and needed to be coerced to join-in during his first couple of seasons of youth soccer. The 23-year-old’s performance in a 1-1tie with France in a June friendly puts the Columbus Crew keeper atop the USA’s depth chart at that position. He was the leadingscorer on his youth team when he filled in for the no-show regular goalkeeper — and he’s stayed in the goal ever since. His parents recall his first youth national team call-up, an envelope arrivingwith bold letters across the top: “Immediately obtain passport.”
