Argentina gives national team job to under-17 coach Lionel Scaloni on an interim basis

In no rush to name a successor to Jorge Sampaoli, the Argentine federation appointed under-17 coach Lionel Scaloni as interim senior coach for upcoming friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia in the United States.

Scaloni, who played for Argentina at the 2006 World Cup, was an assistant to Sampaoli at Sevilla and with the Argentine national team. Former Argentina international Pablo Aimar and Martin Tocalli will serve as assistants.

After Alejandro Sabella resigned following the 2014 World Cup, where Argentina lost to Germany in the final, it had three coaches during World Cup 2018 qualifying: Gerardo Martino -- now at Atlanta United -- Edgardo Bauza and Sampaoli, who coached the Albiceleste in Russia, where it exited in the round of 15.

I wish US soccer could have approached Pablo Aimar as coach/trainer for any of the national selections or for some other capacity that involves teaching and development of US players...US soccer should stay on the ball and watch for foreign great players who have recently retired to add to their US coaching staff....
