MLS Moves: Philadelphia hires Ernst Tanner from RB Salzburg to replace Stewart as sporting director

The Philadelphia Union hired 51-year-old Ernst Tanner to replace Earnie Stewart as its sporting director.

Tanner has worked at 1860 Munich and Hoffenheim in Germany and Austria's Red Bull Salzburg, where he has spent the last six years. When he arrives in September, he will oversee all Union technical and soccer-related decisions on the Union MLS team, Bethlehem Steel it operates in the USL and the Union Academy.

Stewart, who had similar responsibilities, became the U.S. men's national team's general manager on Aug. 1.

At RB Salzburg, Tanner headed its youth division. It won the UEFA Youth League championship in 2017 and reached the semifinals in 2018.

Among the players who came through the academy program at Salzburg are Senegalese star Sadio Mane and Guinean Naby Keita, who both play for Liverpool, and 21-year-old Croatian Duje Caleta-Car(Marseille).

While at 1860 Munich, Tanner brought then-14-year-old Bobby Wood from California to Germany.
