Facebook gobbles up La Liga rights on Indian subcontinent

Soccer fans in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and elsewhere on the Indian subcontinent will have a new way of watching La Liga -- via Facebook.

The social network giant signed an exclusive three-year deal to show Spanish league games, beginning on Friday, in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, The Maldives, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The streams will be advertising-free.

Facebook has 348 million users in the region, 270 million of them in India.

“This is one deal,” Peter Hutton, Facebook’s director of global live sports, told Reuters. “It’s not something that is a big threat to broadcast world.”

Facebook recently signed a deal in Britain to take effect next season to air 20 English Premier League games on its Prime subscription service.
