Joel Sonora earns assist in Argentine debut with Talleres

Former U.S. U-17 and U-20 midfielder Joel Sonora made his debut in the Superliga Argentina, coming off the bench and assisting on Talleres de Cordoba's second goal in its 2-0 win at Gimnasia La Plata.

Sonora's through ball set up Mauro Ortiz in stoppage time to insure Talleres' first win of the 2018-19 season after two losses in the 26-team Argentine first division.

Sonora, the son of former MLS star Diego Sonora, was born in Dallas, where his father played for the Burn in MLS's first two seasons.

Joel Sonora was raised in Argentina and played in the Boca Juniors youth system before moving to VfB Stuttgart in Germany, where he spent three seasons on its second team. He dressed twice for the first team in 2016-17 when Stuttgart was in the second division but did not play.

Sonora, 21, returned in January to sign with Talleres.
