The Portland Timbers have sent U.S. U-20 midfielder Eryk Williamson
on loan to Portuguese first division club Santa Clara for the 2018-19 Portuguese season.
Williamson, 21, played
for the USA at the 2017 Under-20 Cup and turned pro in January out of Maryland. The Timbers acquired Williamson’s MLS Homegrown Player rights from D.C. United.
“Eryk is a
talented young player within our club and this is an excellent opportunity for him to continue his growth and development,” said Gavin Wilkinson
, general manager and president
of soccer for the Timbers. “He has excelled with T2 in his first season with us, and this opportunity abroad will further challenge him in his continued preparations to becoming an impact MLS
player with our club.”
Williamson, 21, made 15 appearances (all starts) for T2 in the USL, but his only first-team appearance came in a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes
in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 6.
The Timbers will be able to recall Williamson in January 2019 if it wishes.
