Spain hands Croatia its worst defeat in history: 6-0

A change of coaches has worked wonders for Spain.

Spain struggled for goals at the World Cup, exiting to host Russia in a shootout in the round of 16. But under new head coach Luis Enrique, La Roja handed 2018 World Cup runner-up Croatia its worst defeat in its history with a 6-0 victory on Tuesday in the UEFA Nations League.

With wins over England (2-1) and Croatia, Spain takes the lead in Group A4 at the end of the first of three windows during which the Nations League group play will be played.

Marco Asensio led La Roja with one goal and three assists. He also had a shot that banged off the crossbar, hit the back of the head of Croatia goalkeeper Nikola Kalinic and went in the goal for an own goal. Saul, Rodrigo, Sergio Ramos and Isco also scored.

Saul, Rodrigo and Asensio are part of Luis Enrique's youth movement that also includes Dani Ceballos and Jose Luis Gaya. World Cup 2010 champions David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique all retired after Russia 2018.
