Weston McKennie's knee injury only a bruise

U.S. Soccer issued a statement on Wednesday that the injury that forced 20-year-old midfielder Weston McKennie out of the USA-Mexico game in the 40th minute was a bruised left knee, not a sprain as was first reported.

On Wednesday, McKennie was re-evaluated and it was determined he had a bruise and no sprain. He was replaced by Julian Green, and the USA went on to win Tuesday's game, 1-0.

McKennie, who also played 83 minutes against Brazil on Friday, returned to Schalke on Wednesday for additional treatment. There was no timetable for his return to action.

He has started both Bundesliga games for Schalke 04, which enters Week 3 without a point. It is one of four teams that opened with two losses.
