2. U.S. U-20 women advance at world championships

The USA moved into the quarterfinals of the Under-20 Women's World Championship with a 4-1 win over Argentina on Monday. The victory was the Americans' second in two games in the Group D play.

France also clinched a berth in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bleuettes, who have the better goal difference (6-0 vs. 6-2), will win the group with a win or tie against the USA in the final group game on Thursday. The Americans must beat France to clinch first place in the group.

UCLA's Danesha Adams set up Virginia's Jess Rostedt for the first goal and scored the second to give the Americans a 2-0 lead at the half. Substitutes Allie Long and Casey Nogueira scored in the second half after Argentina had cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal of its own.

U.S. coach Tim Schulz made seven changes from the starting lineup he sent out against the Congo. In addition, Santa Clara's Jordan Angeli, who moved from outside back to forward. Schulz made two substitutions at halftime, sending on Kelley O'Hara and Long, but both failed to check in with the fourth official before entering the field and were cautioned. That would prove a costly mistake for O'Hara, who received her second yellow card in the 73rd minute for a shirt grab and was sent off. She will be suspended for the France game.

In other play on Tuesday, defending champion Germany set a record for goals scored at a FIFA women's youth world championship with a 9-1 win over Mexico. Germany had been upset by North Korea in its opening game. Only four teams have won its first two games: the USA, France, North Korea and China.
