Birthday boy Christian Pulisic scores fluke winner in Champions League opener

Celebrating his 20th birthday, Christian Pulisic came off the bench to score a late goal and give Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 win at Belgian champion Club Brugge in their Group A opener in the UEFA Champions League.

Pulisic missed Dortmund's last two Bundesliga games and the two U.S. national team friendlies with a muscle injury. He entered Tuesday's game in the 69th minute for English teenager Jadon Sancho, who has been starting up front.

The match appeared to be headed toward a scoreless draw when Brugge defender Matej Mitrovic's clearance was blocked by Pulisic and ball looped in the air and over Brugge keeper Karlo Letica in the 85th minute.

Making his Champions League debut, Weston McKennie started and assisted on Schalke 04's goal by Breel Embolo’s goal in the 1-1 tie with Porto in Gelsenkirchen.

McKennie had exited the USA's match against Mexico a week ago with a knee bruise and did not suit up for Schalke's 2-1 loss at Borussia Moenchangladbach, its third straight loss to start the Bundesliga season.
