UCL: Weston McKennie scores winner in Russia, Christian Pulisic sidelined again

Well, at least one American traveled to Russia this year to play soccer.

And Weston McKennie made the most of it, scoring his first goal ever for Schalke 04, connecting with a header in the 88th minute for the winner in the German club's 1-0 against Lokomotiv Moscow in rainy Moscow in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

McKennie outjumped three defenders to head in Yevhen Konoplyanka's corner kick.

"It's a dream come true, not just to play in the Champions League, but also to score my first goal in my professional club career that way," McKennie said after the game. "I don't really score that often, but I pulled it off today, which was great. We had the game in our grip after the break and rewarded ourselves. The relief is huge, we're happy. We won together today. It wasn't all of my own doing."

He suffered a severe muscle contusion with bleeding in his lower left leg in Schalke's 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich but was back playing within a week, coming on a as aub on Saturday in the 1-0 win over Mainz -- Schalke's first league win after five losses to start the 2018-19 season.

McKennie assisted on Breel Embolo's goal in the 1-1 tie with Porto in the UCL opener. The win over Lokomotiv -- the first Schalke win in the UCL since 2015 -- gives in it four points in the competition, one more than in the Bundesliga.

Pulisic out. Christian Pulisic missed Borussia Dortmund's 3-0 Champions League win over Monaco on Wednesday with what was described as "torn fibers" in his calf.

The news comes two days after he was named to the USA's roster for matches against Colombia and Peru in October. The severity of the injury was not revealed nor the impact on his availability for the October friendlies. He was injured and missed the September matches against Brazil and Mexico.
