New San Jose coach Matias Almeyda battled against NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna when Argentina faced the USA at the 1996 Olympics. Argentina beat the
USA, 3-1, but then 23-year-old Reyna, who opened the scoring in the 1st minute, won many midfield battles against the 22-year-old Almeyda.

In addition to the 1996 Olympics, Almeyda played at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. Although a
defensive midfielder, he scored several goals in his career, which started with River Plate and included stints Sevilla, Lazio, Parma and Inter.
