Youth: George Bello strike earns U.S. U-17s win over Russia

The USA finished runner-up at the U-17 International Youth Tournament in England thanks to comeback wins over Brazil and Russia.

After opening with a 3-1 loss to England, Coach Shaun Tsakiris' team overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Brazil, 3-2, and came back to beat Russia, 2-1, after going down 1-0 in the 35th minute.

Kobe Hernandez equalized against the Russians in the 42nd minute. George Bello struck the gamewinner with a 86th minute free kick.

The Russians fielded a U-18 team at the tournament.

“Overall, I am really happy for the group," Tsakiris said. "The boys fight hard and showed they have a great spirit about them. To compete the way we did against a U-18 Russia team showed tremendous character. Of course, we are always focused on winning competitions at this age, but the results and the performances were something that we as a group can be proud of.”

England, the defending U-17 World Cup champ, took the title with 3-1 wins over Brazil and Russia.
