USL Playoffs: Red Bulls II returns to conference final for third year in a row

For the third year in a row, the New York Red Bulls II will play Louisville City for the USL's Eastern Conference title after stunning top-seed FC Cincinnati, 1-0, before 16,617 fans at Nippert Stadium.

FC Cincinnati came into the game with a USL record 24-game unbeaten streak but lost on a great individual goal by former U.S. U-20 Amando Moreno in the 12th minute. In goal, Evan Louro made three saves to stymie the USL’s highest-scoring team.

In keeping with its development philosophy, NYRBII started no player older than 23. Most are former academy players or college draft picks the MLS Red Bulls are bringing along. Five players have MLS contracts.

Moreno left the Red Bulls, whose academy program he joined in 2009, in 2014 for Mexico's Tijuana but returned in 2018. Louro played for the Red Bulls program for seven seasons before entering the University of Michigan, where he spent three seasons. He signed a Homegrown deal with the Red Bulls in 2017 but has yet to play a game in MLS.

Six starters from NYRBII's 2016 championship team are on the first team, including Tyler Adams and Aaron Long, who are now U.S. internationals.
