Steinbrecher to receive Honorary All-America Award from United Soccer Coaches

Hank Steinbrecher will receive the 2018 Honorary All-America Award from United Soccer Coaches at its 2019 convention in Chicago. Steinbrecher will be presented the award at the All-America Ceremony and Reception on Jan. 12.

“It is an incredible honor to recognize Hank Steinbrecher with our Honorary All-America Award,” said United Soccer Coaches president Lesle Gallimore. “As a fellow military parent, Mr. Steinbrecher has been a great friend and confidante to me during my son’s time in the United States Marine Corps. He has personally shown me what being a part of this great soccer family in America truly means. Every step of the way, from his time as a player, coach and executive, Hank has made enormous contributions to our game and it is with great pride that we honor him for his commitment.”

Steinbrecher played at Mitchell Junior College and NAIA champion Davis & Elkins and served as the men's head coach at Warren Wilson, Appalachian State and Boston University. During his time at BU, he also served as director of the Boston soccer venue at the 1984 Olympic Games and soon thereafter left coaching to become the director of sports marketing at Quaker Oats, a position he held until 1990 when he was hired as the secretary general of U.S. Soccer, a position he held for 10 years.

During his tenure, the USA hosted the 1994 World Cup and hosted and won the 1999 Women's World Cup. It also won the first Women's World Cup (China 1991) and Olympic women's soccer competition (Atlanta 1996).

Steinbrecher was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame as a builder in 2005 and received the Werner Fricker Builder Award in 2012. He was recognized by United Soccer Coaches with the 1990 Bill Jeffrey Long-Term Service Award and presented the 2005 Honor Award, the association’s highest honor. The USASA national amateur champions  compete for the Hank Steinbrecher Cup.

Indeed, Hank is a true GENTELMAN, un verdadero CABALLERO, whom I had the distinct pleasure and honor to meet, before and during WC USA.  As an aside, if anyone had some influence in the formation and then construction of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and helped me collect and secure tha WC USA 1994 Memorabilia, it was, it was him.  Oh, and when he was with Quaker Oats, he provided my youth club/organization and my community college/NCAA DII teams with some supplies, powdered drink and some water jugs, and more importantly supported the formation of the Latin American Soccer Coaches Association (LASCA.)  Indeed and Honor well deserved.  FELICIDADES COACH HANK!
