What's in the news ...

1. Ajax is the latest European club to open an office in the New York, which will be its base for its soccer and business activities in North America. In January, Ajax will take part in the Florida Cup, playing Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo and Flamengo. The New York opening follows Ajax's move this year into China, Japan and Australia, where it has entered into partnerships with local clubs.

2. New San Jose Earthquakes coach Matias Almeyda’s coaching staff includes fellow Argentines Omar Zarif and Carlos Roa, who had been with him at Guadalajara. Another assistant is former Mexican international Benjamin Galindo, who has coached four Liga MX teams, including Chivas twice. Interim head coach Steve Ralston was not retained.

3. Three-time English World Cup veteran Joe Cole has retired after three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The 37-year-old Cole, who played at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups, won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one League Cup with Chelsea. He made 82 league appearances for the Rowdies, including 30 in 2018 when he added duties as assistant coach.
