NCAA Division I Men's Tournament: Five teams advance on penalties, three former champs move on

Five teams needed penalty kicks -- including Michigan, a winner over Princeton, in a 14-round marathon -- to advance in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament on Thursday.

In snowy Ann Arbor, sophomore keeper Henry Mashburn was the hero for the Wolverines, making four saves in the shootout, including stops in the fifth round on Sean McSherry and 12th round on Bryan Prudil with the game on the line, again in the 14th round on Danny Hampton to give Michigan an 11-10 shootout win after the match ended, 1-1.

Lipscomb beat Washington, 5-4, on penalties after their game ended 1-1 and will fly from Seattle to Orlando for its second-round game Sunday at No. 14 seed UCF. The Bisons, who  began the season with a 1-7-0 record, had two heroes in goal -- Chris Zappia, who made eight saves over the 110 minutes, and Luke Wilson, who came on for the shootout and made a pair of saves.

Also winning on penalty kicks were UC Irvine, Furman and Charlotte.

Former champs advance. Three former national champions -- UConn, Michigan State and Akron -- won first-round games.

UConn got a hat trick from Senegalese freshman Ibrahima Diop as it rallied from two goals down in the last 15 minutes to beat Rhode Island, 4-3, for its fifth comeback win of the season.

A snow threat forced UConn to move up the kickoff of its match six hours. Pacific was forced to move its game from Stockton to Fresno Pacific because of the poor air quality caused by the California fires.

Blackbird farewell. West Virginia came back from two goals down after nine minutes to beat LIU Brooklyn, 4-2, in the Blackbirds' last game.

The LIU programs at Brooklyn and Post will be merged into "One LIU" and play at Post, a heretofore Division II program, on the Long Island campus. The Brooklyn program -- national runner-up in 1966 -- produced such college greats as Giovanni Savarese, the Portland Timbers head coach.
