USL Moves: Phoenix removes Rick Schantz's interim tag

Interim coach Rick Schantz, who led the Phoenix Rising to the USL's Western Conference championship, was appointed as the head coach for the 2019 season.

Schantz was promoted to head coach in July following the departure of Frenchman Patrice Carteron to Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.

The Rising compiled a 12-7-1 record under Schantz during the rest of the 2018 regular season and finished third in the Western Conference. It won all three conference playoff games before losing to Louisville City, 1-0, in USL Cup.

“Rick has been a foundational leader for the soccer operations of Phoenix Rising FC since the team’s inception,” said Rising FC governor Berke Bakay.  “He has provided continuity and uninterrupted success for the team and has worked very hard and thoughtfully to earn the title of head coach for Phoenix Rising FC.”

Schantz joined the Rising FC staff as an assistant coach in 2017 from FC Tucson, where he had a record of 71-22-17 and won three consecutive division titles in the PDL.

The Rising will also retain assistant coaches Blair Gavin and Peter Ramage and goalkeeper coach Cory Robertson.
