England avenged its 2-1 loss to Croatia in the semifinals of the World Cup four months ago with a comeback victory by the same score in their final group match in the UEFA Nations League.
Second-half goals from Jesse Lingard
and Harry Kane
gave the Three Lions the win at
sold-out Wembley Stadium and moved them into the final four of the new European competition in June.
England and Croatia both were in line to win the group with a win and be relegated to
League 2 with a loss. A tie would have given Spain the group title and relegated Croatia. Andrej Kramaric
put Croatia ahead just before the hour mark, but England earned the
deserved victory thanks to Lingard’s equalizer in the 78th minute on a play that began with Jo Gomez
’s long throw-in and Kane's winner seven minutes later off a Ben Chilwell
England will join host Portugal and Switzerland, a 5-2 winner over Belgium, in the final four. The fourth team will be the Netherlands or France. The Dutch only need to tie
Germany on Monday to clinch the final berth in the semifinals.
