MLS Moves: Sounders' Alonso becomes MLS free agent

The Seattle Sounders, who lost to the Portland Timbers in the Western Conference semifinals, exercised the 2019 contract options of 10 players, giving them 22 players under contract for next season.

2019 Seattle Roster:
GOALKEEPERS (2): Stefan Frei, *Bryan Meredith
DEFENDERS (8): Waylon Francis, *Kim Kee-hee, Kelvin Leerdam, *Chad Marshall, *Jordan McCrary, Nouhou, Brad Smith, Roman Torres
MIDFIELDERS (9): Handwalla Bwana, *Jordy Delem, Nicolas Lodeiro, Victor Rodriguez, *Alex Roldan, *Cristian Roldan, *Harry Shipp, *Gustav Svensson, *Henry Wingo.
FORWARDS (3): Will Bruin, Jordan Morris, Raul Ruidiaz.
*Contract options exercised.

Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso, who has been with the Sounders since their launch, is out of contract. Seattle declined options on goalkeeper Calle Brown, defender Tony Alfaro, midfielder Lamar Neagle and forward Felix Chenkam. Aaron Kovar, who spent the 2018 season on loan with Los Angeles FC, is also out of contract. Alonso and Neagle are both now eligible for MLS free agency.

"We're excited to bring back the majority of players on our squad to make another strong run in 2019," said Sounders FC general manager and president of soccer Garth Lagerwey. "It's always difficult to make these decisions at the end of every season, but ultimately we're excited about the group we have in place and what we can accomplish next year."

    Not sure it's a good decision. He has been a VERY important part of the team. Injuries and age may be catching up. Or he could go some where and give the Sounders hell next year:)
