Deyna Castellanos leads Florida State past Penn State

After two years away from the Women's College Cup, ACC champion Florida State is returning to the final four thanks to a 1-0 win over Penn State.

Venezuela Deyna Castellanos' goal in the 53rd minute was the Seminoles, who turned things around in the second half after being outplayed in the opening 45 minutes by Penn State, the only unseeded team left in the tournament.

“Today, in the first half, Penn State was the better team,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “They came out and took it to us probably better than anyone has all season long. So credit to them. The good news is that our group fought, competed and hung in there until the second half."

The Noles came out and immediately took control of the game. Kaycie Tillman played a ball to Yujie Zhao in the penalty area, and the Chinese U-20 laid it off to Castellanos at the top of the box, where she scored past PSU goalkeeper, Amanda Dennis.

The goal was the 10th goal of the season for the 2017 FIFA Best Female Player of the Year and the 15th game-winning goal in three seasons, second in FSU history behind only Dagny Brynjarsdottir with 19.

College Cup: Florida State will be playing in its 10th Women's College Cup. The Seminoles won their only title in 2014 after being runners-up in 2007 and 2013. They will play defending champion Stanford in the semifinals next Friday in Cary, North Carolina.
